FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)
How
do I register for a program?
See
our registration page. If
you have questions, contact us.
Do
I have to be in good shape to participate?
While
you do need to be in good physical condition to participate
in a trip, our programs are designed to help you get into
shape before we depart. We'll help you identify fitness goals,
and resources to help you reach them.
What
do I need to do to get into shape?
First,
you'll need your doctor's written permission to participate
in one of our trips. Be sure your doctor understands the elevation
you'll be at, and the length of the hike.
Then,
start walking. If you haven't done much hiking or walking
lately, start easy - a mile or so a day in comfortable shoes
with no pack.
Once
you've gotten into good walking shape, start hiking. Put on
your hiking boots, find some hills or open space near where
you live, and gradually increase your distance.
After
you're easily able to hike 5 miles without stopping and without
a pack, put on your loaded backpack and start hiking with
it. Ideally, your pack will be loaded with everything that
you'd bring with you on the trip (your pack should weigh no
more than 25% of your body weight). Again, work your way up
until you can carry a full pack the distance you'll be hiking
on the trip. Be sure to find lots of hills!
By
gradually working your way up over a period of several weeks,
you'll be in good shape to enjoy your Wilderness Reconnection
Experience.
I'm
not Christian. Is this only for people who believe in God?
Our
programs are open to all cancer survivors, regardless of their
faith or beliefs.
